El Salvador is rapidly transforming into a premier travel destination, welcoming 1.7 million international visitors between January and April 2026. This figure represents a remarkable 35% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Tourism Minister Morena Valdez highlighted that the country is well on its way to meeting its annual goal of 4.2 million visitors, stating, “We have seen significant growth in these last four months… this marks the pace that we are on the right path.”
The United States remains a critical market for the nation’s travel sector, contributing 440,000 visitors so far this year. While Guatemala led the influx with 748,000 arrivals, the steady 8% growth from the U.S. underscores El Salvador’s rising appeal among North American travelers. April 2026 stood out as a historic milestone, becoming the highest-grossing month for arrivals in the country’s history with over 473,000 visitors.

The economic impact of this travel boom is substantial, with international tourism generating $871 million in revenue during the first quarter alone. This is a 19% increase over the previous year and a staggering 90% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Minister Valdez attributed this success to the national security climate, noting that “thanks to the security that President Nayib Bukele has provided… El Salvador is positioning itself as one of the emerging destinations.”
Travelers are staying longer and spending more, with average stays lasting between three and nine nights and daily expenditures ranging from $80 to $180 per person. Local businesses report that international tourists are increasingly seeking «undiscovered destinations» within the country. To support this demand, the government is currently hosting business rounds to connect local entrepreneurs with international stakeholders and continue the momentum.
Despite the record-breaking numbers, the administration remains focused on long-term sustainability and quality. Efforts are being channeled into specialized training for the tourism workforce and addressing infrastructure challenges. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the primary focus moving forward will be maintaining the cleanliness and order of key destinations to ensure El Salvador remains a competitive and attractive choice on the global stage.
