U.S. Fried Chicken Giant Popeyes Announces Major Expansion in El Salvador for 2026.

The Export and Investment Promotion Agency of El Salvador, Invest, has officially announced a significant expansion for the American fried chicken chain Popeyes. Following its recent return to the Salvadoran market, the Louisiana-style franchise is set to open six additional restaurants throughout 2026. This move highlights a growing confidence in the local economy and a surging demand for international dining options.

While the specific locations for the six new branches remain undisclosed, the expansion follows the successful opening of a restaurant in the Plaza Merliot food court in Santa Tecla on December 30, 2025. Invest also confirmed through a promotional video that another branch is currently under construction, separate from the six planned for later this year. This rapid growth marks a triumphant return for the brand to the country.

The resurgence of the franchise is particularly notable given its previous departure from the market. In an interview conducted in March 2025, the Planning Authority of the Historic Center of San Salvador (APLAN) noted that the brand would be part of the city’s revitalized downtown area. During that discussion, APLAN representatives explained that the franchise had previously withdrawn from El Salvador due to issues related to crime.

The arrival of these new locations aligns with the ongoing transformation of San Salvador’s Historic Center, which has become a primary hub for investment and tourism. Popeyes, founded by Alvin C. Copeland Sr. in 1972 in a New Orleans suburb, is now one of the largest quick-service chicken chains globally. Its expansion in El Salvador adds to a massive network of over 4,000 restaurants spanning from the United States to Spain and China.

By strengthening its footprint in the region, Popeyes is tapping into a market that is increasingly attractive to U.S. franchises. The brand’s commitment to opening multiple sites in a single year reflects a stabilized business environment and a warm reception from Salvadoran consumers. As the year progresses, more details are expected regarding where these new Louisiana-style flavors will land next.
