El Salvador is reaching new heights in its mission to become a premier global travel hub with the inauguration of the El Zapote aerodrome in Ahuachapán. This new airstrip, located near the stunning Barra de Santiago, is designed to streamline regional travel and provide international tourists with direct access to the country’s pristine western coastline. Tourism Minister Morena Valdez emphasized that this project fulfills a presidential mandate to establish an open-skies framework, stating that the idea is to announce open skies to allow flights within the region.

The project represents a massive collaborative effort between the private sector and several government entities, including the Civil Aviation Authority and the Executive Port Commission. By integrating immigration and customs services directly at the site, the government ensures a seamless entry process for visitors arriving via private or charter flights. This infrastructure allows travelers to bypass traditional land routes, significantly cutting down travel time to some of the most scenic coastal destinations in Central America.

According to Carlos Umaña, president of the Salvadoran Chamber of Tourism, the goal is to position El Salvador as a pioneer in intraregional connectivity. He noted that the new facility will make flying between neighboring countries as simple as driving across the border, explaining that if we improve air interconnectivity with these short flights, we encourage tourists visiting Panama or Costa Rica to also visit El Salvador and Guatemala. This strategy aims to capture a larger share of the North American market currently touring the region.

The El Zapote facility joins a growing network of specialized flight strips, following the recent opening of the El Jagüey aerodrome earlier this year. These sites are specifically curated to highlight the diverse beauty of the nation’s «Surf City» circuit and its marine ecosystems. Valdez noted the unique appeal of these aerial routes, mentioning that there is already a runway where planes and helicopters land, showing the different destinations of the country, especially Surf City.

With these advancements, El Salvador is quickly transforming its logistics landscape to cater to high-end tourism and adventure seekers from the United States. By fostering an environment where regional movement is fast and efficient, the country is cementing its reputation as a modern, accessible, and must-visit destination in the heart of the Americas.
