El Salvador’s main air gateway is gaining international recognition as one of the most reliable airports in the world, signaling a shift in how the country is perceived by global travelers. The El Salvador International Airport, officially named after Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero, has secured a top position in a new global ranking that measures punctuality and operational performance.

According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, the airport ranks second worldwide among small airports, achieving an impressive 91.7 percent on-time departure rate and 89 percent for arrivals. The ranking places El Salvador just behind Taiwan’s Kaohsiung International Airport and ahead of several well-known terminals across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Notably, the Salvadoran airport outperformed recognized destinations such as Ibiza Airport in Spain, Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro, and even San Antonio International Airport in Texas. The results highlight how efficiency is no longer exclusive to large, high-traffic hubs, but increasingly driven by technology, coordination, and streamlined operations.
Regional comparisons also reinforce El Salvador’s growing aviation strength. Alongside Panama’s Tocumen International Airport, the country is helping position Central America as a competitive corridor for international travel. Industry experts point out that factors such as gate coverage, airline coordination, and infrastructure upgrades play a critical role in achieving consistent on-time performance.
The airport’s rise is supported by sustained passenger growth and a significant investment strategy. In the first months of 2026 alone, more than one million passengers have passed through the terminal, marking an 8 percent increase. Authorities have also committed $245 million toward modernization projects, with officials stating that the goal is to deliver a seamless, comfortable experience that meets the highest international standards.
