UAE Nuclear Authority Hosts Salvadoran Delegation to Support Emerging Nuclear Program.

The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) of the United Arab Emirates hosted a high-level delegation from El Salvador at its headquarters in Abu Dhabi, as part of ongoing bilateral engagement to support El Salvador’s efforts to develop a national nuclear energy program aligned with international standards.

The Salvadoran delegation included representatives from the Organism for the Implementation of the Nuclear Energy Program in El Salvador (OIPEN), as well as senior officials from the country’s energy sector and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The visit focused on understanding the UAE’s nuclear regulatory framework, particularly the importance of regulatory independence, institutional development, and capacity building for countries beginning nuclear programs.

During the meetings, FANR shared its experience in nuclear safety, radiation protection, nuclear security, safeguards, and emergency preparedness and response. Discussions also addressed licensing procedures, inspection practices, and cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, highlighting the role of an independent regulator in ensuring the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technologies.

The visit also provided a platform to discuss a non-binding Statement of Interest between FANR and OIPEN, aimed at promoting future cooperation, technical exchanges, and knowledge sharing. For El Salvador, the engagement represents a step toward strengthening institutional capacity and learning from international best practices as it explores nuclear energy as part of its long-term development strategy.
