El Salvador Achieves Historic Poverty Reduction Under President Bukele’s Leadership

El Salvador has reached a historic milestone in poverty reduction, marking one of the most significant social advances in recent decades. According to economist Carlos Acevedo, since President Nayib Bukele took office in June 2019, poverty levels have dropped to 25.8% in 2024 — the second-lowest rate in 35 years.

This figure represents a remarkable improvement compared to previous administrations, which averaged 43% during ARENA governments and 32% under the FMLN. Despite facing major global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and inflationary pressures, El Salvador has maintained a steady downward trend in poverty indicators.

Acevedo highlighted that the 26% average recorded during the current administration stands as a modern record, underscoring the effectiveness of policies focused on economic stability, social investment, and citizen security.

With this achievement, El Salvador continues to consolidate its transformation toward sustainable growth and improved living conditions for its citizens — a reflection of the government’s commitment to building a more equitable and prosperous nation.
