President Nayib Bukele expressed his gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump following remarks at the United Nations General Assembly, where Trump recognized El Salvador’s efforts in fighting organized crime. Through his account on X, Bukele thanked Trump for designating the Barrio 18 gang as a terrorist group.
Thank you for your words Mr. President @realDonaldTrump, during your address today at the United Nations General Assembly. Also, thank you for designating the “Barrio 18” gang as a terrorist group, whose crimes have inflicted so much harm on our societies, Bukele wrote.
He emphasized that El Salvador had already taken this step despite criticism from some organizations and noted that most gang members are now held in the Confinement Center of Terrorism (CECOT). Your message underscores the importance of working together with determination in the fight against terrorism, and we are pleased to see that our governments are fully aligned in this cause, Bukele stated. He concluded by stressing that cooperation between El Salvador and the United States is vital to eradicating criminal structures and ensuring peace and security for both nations.
