El Salvador Among Top Central American Countries with Lowest U.S. Visa Overstay Rates in 2023.

El Salvador has once again demonstrated strong migration discipline in the United States, according to official data from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State for fiscal year 2023. With a reported overstay rate of just 1.76%, the country remains among those with the lowest irregular migration figures in Central America.

From 227,146 expected departures, only 3,823 Salvadorans are suspected of remaining in the U.S. beyond their authorized stay. An additional 178 individuals did overstay, but have already exited the country. This results in a suspected in-country overstay rate of 1.68%, significantly lower than rates that have triggered punitive measures for other countries, such as consular bond requirements now faced by Malawi or Zambia.

“These numbers show a positive trend among Salvadorans traveling to the United States,” stated the Asociación Agenda Migrante El Salvador (AAMES), emphasizing how such behavior strengthens the country’s standing before U.S. immigration and diplomatic authorities.

Importantly, El Salvador is not classified as a country that abuses the U.S. visa system, a position that favors continued bilateral cooperation and facilitates future mobility for Salvadoran citizens.
