El Salvador Maintains Emergency Measures to Protect Region’s Lowest Crime Rate.

El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly has approved the forty-first extension of the state of emergency, a pivotal security measure credited with transforming the country into the safest in the Western Hemisphere. The extension, valid for an additional 30 days nationwide, received 57 votes in favor, backed by the Nuevas Ideas party, PDC, and PCN.

Originally enacted on March 27, 2022, the state of emergency was introduced by President Nayib Bukele in response to a sharp increase in homicides. Since then, it has served as a constitutional tool for dismantling gang structures and restoring peace in communities long affected by criminal violence.

Under this ongoing strategy, authorities have captured over 80,000 individuals linked to gang activity or associated criminal networks. The measure continues to face opposition from parties such as ARENA and Vamos, who voted against the latest extension.

Despite debate, government officials argue the continued application of the state of emergency is essential to preserving national security and economic stability by maintaining low crime rates and public confidence.
