Technology and Citizen Cooperation Drive El Salvador’s Security Efforts.

The Minister of National Defense of El Salvador, René Francis Merino Monroy, reaffirmed this week that the use of advanced technology has been crucial in locating and dismantling the remaining gang structures across the country.

According to the minister, the successful implementation of the different phases of the Territorial Control Plan, combined with the strategic use of technology, has enabled authorities to identify and disband gang remnants attempting to hide in communities and rural areas.

In one of the most recent security operations conducted in San Bartolo, Ilopango, and surrounding areas, security forces deployed unmanned aerial patrols to detect and intercept criminal activity. “During our incursion into various neighborhoods in San Bartolo, district of Ilopango, San Salvador East, we relied on aerial unmanned patrols to locate the terrorists attempting to regroup and arrest them,” stated the National Civil Police on their official X account.

In addition to aerial surveillance, police officers and army personnel continue to conduct door-to-door searches, checking identification documents to ensure no wanted criminals are hiding among residents.

Minister Merino Monroy also emphasized the importance of public collaboration in the ongoing efforts. “We thank the population for the trust they have placed in the authorities,” he said, noting that citizen reports have played a vital role in eradicating criminal threats.

In another significant development, the minister reported the interception of a low-profile vessel (LPV) carrying 1.3 tons of cocaine, located 600 nautical miles off the coast of Estero de Jaltepeque. The cargo, valued at $33 million, was seized thanks to the swift action of the Navy.

He highlighted the professionalism of the naval personnel involved. “Our National Navy team is rigorously trained and equipped to respond effectively in any situation during these operations,” Merino Monroy explained.

He concluded by noting growing international recognition of El Salvador’s security efforts. “It’s impressive how much they value the work being done—not just in the fight against drug trafficking, but also through the Territorial Control Plan. They see the results and understand that crime is being confronted here with firmness and determination,” he said.
