To commemorate the International Day of Women in Diplomacy on June 24, El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its Diplomatic Institute “Dr. José Gustavo Guerrero,” held a forum titled “Breaking Barriers: Voices of Women Diplomats Accredited in El Salvador.”

The event brought together Vice Minister Cindy Mariella Portal and ambassadors from France, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Spain, as well as the UN Women representative in El Salvador. They shared personal experiences and discussed the challenges and progress of women in diplomacy.

“This day reminds us of the vital role women play in diplomacy and the need for full and equal participation,” said Vice Minister Portal, adding that women have consistently broken barriers to represent their nations with excellence.

She highlighted pioneers like Tula Serra Morazán and Maribel Arrieta Gálvez, who paved the way for Salvadoran women in the diplomatic service. Today, three women lead the Foreign Ministry at its highest level, while 20 serve as ambassadors and 28 as consuls general around the world.
