The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, through the Directorate for the Protection of People in Mobility, in coordination with the “Dr. José Gustavo Guerrero” Diplomatic Institute (IDG) and with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), recently concluded a virtual training course focused on psychosocial care for returned migrants.
The initiative aimed to improve the integral care provided to individuals returning to the country, by addressing their emotional and social needs as a key part of their reintegration process. The course was carried out under the framework of the program Peace and Reintegration of Migrants Returning Home, developed jointly with the IOM.
A total of 48 participants received training in areas such as the migratory experience, empowerment, self-agency, support networks, mental health, and life planning. Each module offered interactive and easy-to-understand content to enhance the learning process.
The training is part of ongoing efforts to create, expand, and strengthen innovative mechanisms for reintegration and care tailored to the diverse profiles of returnees.
This coordinated effort allowed us to deliver a course tailored for our returned migrant population, especially in support of their reintegration and adaptation after facing difficult moments during their journey, stay abroad, and eventual return, said María Elena Beltrán, interim and ad honorem director of the Protection Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Return is one of the most challenging stages for individuals; therefore, we reaffirm the importance of training as a channel to strengthen their skills, capacities, and self-awareness, she added.
Beltrán also highlighted the resilience of Salvadorans in the face of adversity. That is why the Ministry works to support their reintegration with dignity and reinforced capacities. We provide all necessary support so their reintegration and new projects can be truly successful, she concluded.
