Ankara Celebrates Salvadoran Heritage with New Park and International Justice Monument.

El Salvador’s diplomatic mission in Türkiye, in coordination with the Metropolitan Municipality of Ankara, recently inaugurated the “Republic of El Salvador Park” in the Çankaya district of the Turkish capital. The event also featured the unveiling of a commemorative bust and plaque dedicated to the distinguished Salvadoran diplomat and jurist, Dr. José Gustavo Guerrero.

The new park is envisioned as a place of connection and learning, where current and future generations will have the opportunity to reflect on Dr. Guerrero’s legacy and appreciate the lasting impact of his ideas. His contributions to international law and diplomacy are considered foundational and enduring.

Dr. José Gustavo Guerrero, born on June 26, 1876, in El Salvador, served as Minister of Foreign Affairs (1927–1928) and later gained international recognition when he presided over the tenth session of the League of Nations Assembly in 1929. His career continued as judge and president of the Permanent Court of International Justice (1936–1946), before becoming the first president of the International Court of Justice (1946–1949).

The ceremony on June 19 brought together local authorities, special guests, and members of the Salvadoran diaspora in Türkiye.

In his speech, Salvadoran Ambassador to Türkiye, Héctor Jaime, stated: “Today we pay tribute to a figure whose ideas transcend borders and eras. The inauguration of this park and bust is deeply symbolic: it represents the will of our peoples to grow closer, to learn from one another, and to build lasting bonds of cooperation. It is also a tangible symbol of the bridge we have built between our nations.”

This gesture marks a significant milestone in the strengthening of friendly ties between El Salvador and Türkiye, while honoring one of the most important figures in the history of global diplomacy.
