Salvadoran Flavor in Scandinavia: Pupusa Workshop Highlights Latin American Culture.

In an effort to promote Salvadoran gastronomy and culture, the Embassy of El Salvador in Norway recently hosted a hands-on pupusa workshop with the support of chef Roberto Carlos Martínez, a Salvadoran living in Norway.

The culinary event was designed especially for children and teenagers from the Oslo International School, as part of the Spanish Festival organized annually by the Embassy of Spain for schools that teach Spanish as a foreign language.

Students from countries including Italy, Brazil, Spain, the United States, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and Norway had the chance to prepare their own pupusas under the guidance of chef Martínez. Afterward, they enjoyed the results while watching the first episode of a documentary about the history of pupusas.

Held in two sessions on June 10 at the Salvadoran Embassy, the workshop welcomed prize-winning students from the Oslo International School, representatives from the institution and the Spanish Embassy, as well as special guests.

“We created this workshop to promote our gastronomy, our culture, and the Spanish language. It was a delightful surprise and a unique experience, as many of the participants had their first contact with our country—and of course, with our cuisine. Pupusas were the star of the event and were enjoyed by youth from 10 different nationalities,” said Ambassador Beltrán.

Spanish Ambassador Alejandra del Rio Novo also praised the event, highlighting the close cooperation between the two embassies, the uniqueness of the activity, and both countries’ shared commitment to promoting the Spanish language globally.

School representatives emphasized the unprecedented opportunity the Salvadoran Embassy provided for students to not only practice Spanish, but also to explore new culinary traditions, as none of them had previously tried El Salvador’s most iconic dish.

The Embassy of El Salvador concluded that hospitality is at the heart of Salvadoran identity, a sentiment confirmed by the enthusiastic participation and gratitude expressed during both sessions of the workshop.
