In a symbolic gesture of friendship and cultural diplomacy, the Embassy of El Salvador in Austria, concurrently accredited to Slovakia, along with the Honorary Consulate in Slovakia, planted seeds of the maquilishuat tree—El Salvador’s National Tree—at the Arboretum Mlyňany Botanical Garden.

The initiative is part of the “El Salvador Renace” public diplomacy strategy promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which aims to project national values, symbols, and traditions abroad through meaningful actions.
The maquilishuat, known for its delicate pink blossoms, symbolizes renewal and hope. Declared the National Tree in 1939, its flowers bloom between February and April, representing natural beauty and resilience—key elements of Salvadoran identity. Due to its tropical origin, the tree will be cultivated in a controlled environment within the arboretum, ensuring suitable conditions for its growth.

The event was led by El Salvador’s Ambassador to Austria, Julia Villatoro, and Honorary Consul in Slovakia, Igor Moravčík, whose support was crucial in making the cultural exchange possible.
“The maquilishuat, with its delicate pink flowers, is admired not only for its natural beauty but also for its deep cultural meaning, as it connects us with our roots and traditions,” said Ambassador Villatoro during her remarks.
The event concluded with a guided tour of the botanical garden and a tasting of Salvadoran coffee, served alongside traditional quesadilla.
