The Embassy of El Salvador in Portugal recently hosted a masterclass on Salvadoran gastronomy at the School of Hospitality and Tourism of the West in Óbidos, Portugal. The initiative aimed to introduce students and the local community to El Salvador’s rich culinary heritage.

Coordinated in collaboration with the Casa de América Latina, the session was led by Salvadoran chef Carlos De La Rosa as part of the school’s international cuisine curriculum. The event began with a theoretical presentation on the history and evolution of Salvadoran cuisine.
Following the lecture, students participated in a hands-on cooking session under the guidance of Chef De La Rosa, along with the school’s own instructors, Chefs Tiago Costa and João Nuno Silva. The group prepared three traditional Salvadoran dishes: pupusas, sopa de gallina, and empanadas.

The final creations were presented to an audience that included representatives of Casa de América Latina, the school’s director and chefs, the president of the Municipal Chamber of Caldas da Rainha, officials from the Salvadoran embassy, and other special guests. “It was an honor to showcase the flavors of El Salvador to such a receptive and talented group of students,” said Chef De La Rosa.

The event was also attended by El Salvador’s ambassador to Portugal, Rhina Bardi, who highlighted the importance of cultural exchange through cuisine.
