The Government of El Salvador, through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), has officially launched Observa y Reporta (Observe and Report), a new digital tool that enables citizens to report local weather conditions, including rainfall and wind intensity, directly from their mobile devices.

This initiative aims to improve national climate monitoring and risk prevention systems by integrating real-time citizen input. The tool, which is accessible via any smartphone, allows users to activate their location and fill out a brief form indicating the intensity of rainfall, presence of thunder, and wind conditions in their area.
“This tool helps us understand how citizens are perceiving different weather events in real time, which enhances the exchange of critical data for forecasting and emergency response,” said Environment Minister Fernando López, during the launch event titled El Salvador: A Prepared Nation.
The collected data will be analyzed by the Observatory of Threats and Natural Resources, allowing meteorological authorities to refine forecasts and issue more precise alerts. The tool supports the Ministry’s broader strategy of Impact-Based Forecasts, which anticipate not only weather patterns but also their potential consequences on infrastructure, livelihoods, and communities.
As the rainy season approaches, the Salvadoran Government reinforces its commitment to proactive climate resilience and disaster prevention. Observa y Reporta represents a step forward in using digital citizen participation to create a safer, more responsive nation.
