The Vice Ministry of Transport (VMT) in El Salvador continues to enforce vehicle inspections aimed at ensuring that passenger transport services meet all operational requirements, in an effort to guarantee the safety of tourists during the Holy Week vacation period.
Mario Llort, inspector general of the VMT, confirmed that these checks will remain in place over the weekend, with authorities focusing on verifying that public transport operators have the proper documentation and comply with national transport laws. “We are checking tourist transport operators, reviewing documents such as permits, driver licenses, and circulation cards. The goal is to ensure tourists are transported safely,” he said.
Llort also noted that the VMT is working in coordination with the Fund for Attention to Victims of Traffic Accidents (Fonat), which is helping distribute safety equipment to drivers who lack the mandatory items required by Salvadoran traffic law.
The official emphasized that vehicle inspections will apply not only to collective transport but also to private vehicles. Checkpoints are being set up along popular tourist routes and near religious activity sites. “Our teams are deployed at access points to the country’s main tourist destinations, as well as in areas where religious events have taken place. We urge the public to check their vehicles before leaving home, carry safety equipment, ensure lights are working properly, and drive responsibly,” he added.
