El Salvador Launches Free Cycling Program to Support Easter Holiday Tourism.

The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) in El Salvador has launched a new initiative to promote tourism and sustainable mobility by opening free bike stations in the Historic Center of San Salvador. The stations, available daily from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., allow both locals and tourists to borrow bicycles at no cost and explore the capital’s cultural heart.

“Visit the Historic Center of San Salvador, stop by our bike station and borrow a bicycle completely free to explore,” the MOP announced on social media, as part of its efforts to support tourism during the Easter holidays.

The Historic Center is among the most visited destinations in the country. To ensure visitor safety, elements of the National Civil Police (PNC) and the Armed Forces are permanently stationed throughout the area during the holiday season.

The initiative also seeks to encourage a shift in transportation habits. “We want to promote the use of bicycles as an alternative means of transport and a sustainable, low-emission option. A cultural change is needed in our country,” said Deputy Minister of Transport, Nelson Reyes.

In addition to the bike program, the MOP has kept its road assistance plan active throughout the holiday period. Drivers experiencing issues on the road can call 2510-0199 for free support. As of yesterday, the ministry reported 432 roadside assistances—86% in the central zone, 9% in the west, and 5% in the east of the country.

Meanwhile, Minister of Public Works Romeo Rodríguez shared updates on the progress of the lighting project on Monseñor Romero Boulevard. A total of 314 LED luminaires and 342 translucent poles in the colors of El Salvador’s flag are being installed. “The poles are equipped with LED technology that will illuminate all six lanes. We’ve made significant progress and expect to complete the lighting project this April,” Rodríguez stated.
