A group of more than 30 Salvadorans departed yesterday for Mallorca, Spain, as part of the Labor Migration Program spearheaded by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (MTPS). The initiative aims to provide legal job opportunities abroad while preserving family unity.
The workers, who left with enthusiasm and high hopes for their families’ well-being, will be employed as lifeguards in a renowned hotel chain. Labor Minister Rolando Castro emphasized that this marks the initial phase of a broader agreement with Spanish employers, which seeks to offer employment opportunities in various sectors, including agriculture, a field with high demand in Spain.

«In these first hours, a contingent of more than 30 people is leaving. This is the first test being carried out, but the agreement we have with Spanish employers is to provide opportunities for hundreds of workers in different sectors,» stated Minister Castro.
The program is set to span four years, with this initial group working for eight months, followed by four months of vacation to reunite with their families. «We are very pleased because we are moving toward the concept of circular migration, ensuring that employment is not only orderly and safe but also structured in a way that does not break up the family unit,» Castro added.
Additionally, the minister announced plans to expand job opportunities in Europe, particularly in the fields of cooking, painting, and customer service. He also hinted at potential agreements with other European countries. “We believe that by the end of this semester, we will be announcing a second or third country in Europe,” he noted.

One of the program’s beneficiaries, Gerson Murcia, a 22-year-old from Puerto de La Libertad, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. «I’m grateful to President Nayib Bukele and Minister Castro for this chance to improve our lives and support our families. We will honor the name of El Salvador,» he said.
This labor migration initiative underscores El Salvador’s commitment to providing its citizens with legal and structured employment opportunities abroad, contributing to economic growth while ensuring family stability.
