For the first time in its history, the Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities (UCCI) is holding its annual strategic planning meeting outside of Spain. Today and tomorrow, the 20th meeting of international relations directors and coordinators will take place in the Historic Center of San Salvador, gathering representatives from 19 Ibero-American cities.
The meeting, which will define the organization’s roadmap for the year, will be inaugurated by Mario Durán, mayor of San Salvador Centro and co-president of the UCCI. Participating municipal officials will collaborate on developing common strategies, sharing progress, and strengthening cooperation in areas such as technical training and international partnerships.
Traditionally held in Madrid, Spain, this marks the first time UCCI’s strategic session takes place abroad, reflecting the organization’s commitment to regional engagement and decentralization.
During their visit, officials will also explore the recovery and revitalization process of San Salvador’s Historic Center. According to Manuel Rodríguez Joachín, manager of cooperation and international relations for the San Salvador Centro mayor’s office, this will provide valuable insights into urban renewal initiatives taking place in the region.
The event underscores the importance of collaborative governance among Ibero-American cities, fostering exchange and strengthening diplomatic ties to promote sustainable urban development.
