President Nayib Bukele responded to Elon Musk’s endorsement of a video showing prisoners in El Salvador participating in productive activities as part of their rehabilitation. Musk praised the initiative, calling it “the way” forward, to which Bukele replied, emphasizing its core principles: “Common sense / Fairness / Efficiency.”

In his response, President Bukele explained that 40% of the nation’s prison population is already contributing to society by working on various projects. “In return, they receive a shorter sentence and learn a skill,” Bukele tweeted, noting that this program is not available for individuals convicted of violent crimes such as murder or rape.
The initiative allows prisoners to work on infrastructure projects, including building roads, hospitals, and schools. They also contribute by manufacturing uniforms, furniture, and helping with agricultural and environmental tasks, such as growing crops and cleaning rivers.
Bukele’s program aims to turn inmates into productive members of society, while also benefiting the country’s development.
