The speed camera system on the road to Puerto de La Libertad will start operating next week, Minister of Public Works Romeo Rodríguez confirmed during an interview on Noticiero El Salvador Thursday night.
Rodríguez explained that preparations are underway to launch the system by the end of next week, making it the third active speed camera system on major roads in El Salvador.
“We are working on the road to Puerto de La Libertad to ensure the system starts by the end of next week,” Rodríguez said.
Currently, speed cameras are operational on the Monseñor Romero Boulevard and the Comalapa Highway. The minister highlighted the need for these systems on the Comalapa Highway due to the high number of traffic fatalities in 2024.
“On the Comalapa Highway, the system has been active since yesterday at midnight. Unfortunately, 28 drivers were fined yesterday for speeding in an area with a 110 km/h (68 mph) limit,” Rodríguez noted.
He added that speeding is the second leading cause of death on Salvadoran roads, with 38 fatalities reported last year and two deaths already recorded in 2025.
Rodríguez called on drivers to respect traffic laws, reminding them of the increased fines for violations, following recent legislative reforms. These measures aim to improve road safety across the country.
