According to official data from the National Civil Police (PNC), the country reached zero homicides on January 15, setting a new record in its efforts to reduce violent crime. This achievement reflects the continued success of security policies implemented by the government of President Nayib Bukele.
Since the launch of the Territorial Control Plan in 2019, El Salvador has recorded over 800 days without homicides, a clear indication of the positive impact of these security measures. The implementation of the Exceptional State of Emergency in 2022 further bolstered these efforts, helping to dismantle criminal structures operating within the country.
In 2024, El Salvador closed the year with a homicide rate of 1.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, positioning the nation as one of the safest in the region. This marks a stark contrast to the country’s situation just a few years ago when it was one of the most violent nations globally. President Bukele has proudly noted that with this homicide rate, El Salvador is now the safest country in the Western Hemisphere.
