The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced an 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador, effective from March 10, 2025, to September 9, 2026. This extension allows eligible Salvadoran nationals and individuals without nationality who last habitually resided in El Salvador to maintain their TPS designation, provided they meet all eligibility requirements.

TPS was initially granted to El Salvador following the devastating earthquakes in 2001, which caused substantial disruptions in the country’s living conditions. The extension reflects ongoing environmental and infrastructure challenges in El Salvador, including significant climate and geological events that continue to affect the country’s ability to adequately accommodate returning nationals.
Current TPS beneficiaries must re-register within a designated 60-day period to extend their status through September 9, 2026. The DHS also automatically extends the validity of certain Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) through March 9, 2026, for individuals who timely re-register and meet eligibility requirements.
El Salvador’s Ambassador to the United States, Milena Mayorga, addressed the TPS extension, stating: “To our people in the United States, we inform you that during the re-registration period for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), the instruction given by President Nayib Bukele is to always support you. We will assist you throughout your process with form completion at the consular network and embassy, free of charge.”

The extension underscores the continued support for Salvadorans in the U.S., recognizing the persistent adverse conditions in their home country. For more information on the registration process and eligibility, individuals can visit the USCIS TPS webpage.
