Avianca is taking significant steps towards inclusivity by installing a Braille system in its A320 fleet. With 2024 marking one of the airline’s best years, the carrier is making the experience of visually impaired travelers a priority by equipping 48 of its aircraft with this important system.

The Braille initiative began in 2023 and underwent a pilot test in the second half of 2024, where six A320 aircraft serving national and international routes were fitted with new row markers featuring enhanced contrast and Braille numbering. These changes are designed to improve visibility for people with low vision.

Michael Swiatek, Chief Accessibility Officer at Abra, called the project a major milestone. He explained, “An aviation more for everyone is our objective, and we are committed to making it a reality. We want more and more travelers with disabilities to enjoy a comfortable travel experience adapted to their needs.”

Avianca plans to complete the installation of the Braille system across its entire A320 fleet by 2025, including signage in aircraft bathrooms. The initiative will extend across the airline’s domestic and international routes, ensuring that as many travelers as possible benefit from these updates.

The announcement was made on World Braille Day as part of Avianca’s “Avianca Accessible” program, underscoring the airline’s commitment to transforming air travel into a more inclusive and accessible experience for all passengers. This initiative aims to break down barriers and create a more comfortable travel environment for those with visual impairments.
