Andres Strengthens Solid Waste Collection Operation in Eastern San Salvador.

The National Solid Waste Authority (Andres) has launched a robust solid waste collection operation in San Salvador Este, covering four districts: Tonacatepeque, San Martín, Ilopango, and Soyapango. This initiative, part of a pilot program, aims to streamline waste management and serve as a model for future nationwide implementation.

Since the Special Law on Collection, Utilization, and Final Disposal of Waste came into effect on December 20, 2024, Andres has been leading collection efforts in San Salvador Este, responding to the urgent need for waste removal, especially after the year-end holidays. The authority has been actively monitoring its progress on social media via its X account @recolectoressv, where it shares regular updates and photographs showcasing before-and-after conditions of the streets and public areas.

One of the main goals of this pilot project is to prevent waste accumulation from blocking drainage systems, which can lead to severe flooding and pose health risks to residents. By removing waste quickly and efficiently, Andres aims to mitigate these hazards and reduce the spread of infections.

Andres is also enhancing its services by providing multiple communication channels for citizens to report waste issues. The call center 929 and WhatsApp line 2501-0200 have been set up for residents to share complaints and request waste removal. Additionally, a website, www.opinion.andres.gob.sv, has been launched to further support the public in reporting problems.

Trucks equipped with GPS technology are being used to ensure the efficient monitoring of waste collection routes, guaranteeing timely and organized service. Public Works Minister Romeo Herrera emphasized that Andres was created not only to assist local governments but also to directly support families and ensure a cleaner environment for all.

In its communications, Andres urges citizens to cooperate by only disposing of waste when collection teams arrive, emphasizing that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility.
