The Salvadoran government’s focus on developing the eastern zone of the country is driving significant economic and tourist growth, with major investments in infrastructure projects. One of the key developments is the Gerardo Barrios Ring Road in San Miguel, a $160 million project supported by Japan, which is enhancing transportation and logistics. This modern road network, recently inaugurated, serves as the most important infrastructure investment in the eastern zone in the last 50 years, helping to speed up cargo transit and improve regional trade competitiveness.

Minister of Public Works Romeo Rodríguez highlighted the project’s role in reducing logistics and transportation costs, which are challenges faced by other Central American countries. The ring road benefits over 245,000 residents and includes four bridges, two interchanges, and several overpasses, improving connectivity in the region. Additionally, $3 million will be allocated for street lighting, which began in early December.
Alongside the ring road, the Surf City 2 project is transforming the eastern coast into a major tourism hub. Located in Jucuarán, Usulután, this $41 million initiative includes 13.6 kilometers of road connecting Usulután and San Miguel, making beaches like Punta Mango, El Cuco, and Las Flores more accessible. The project has already created 600 direct jobs and 1,200 indirect jobs, with more businesses opening in response to increased tourist demand.

The road improvements are complemented by the construction of scenic viewpoints at key coastal locations, further boosting tourism. “We’ve seen an increase in foreign visitors, and more businesses are opening to cater to them,” said local resident Claudia Anaya.
Additionally, infrastructure upgrades such as the remodeling of the Caserío Agua Fría School and Jucuarán Health Unit, part of Surf City 2’s second phase, further enhance community development. This project is poised to replicate the success of the original Surf City in La Libertad, where tourism and local business have flourished thanks to targeted investments.
President Nayib Bukele praised the impact of Surf City, stating, “We didn’t create the beaches, but we brought development and an innovative concept that has transformed the area.” The ongoing projects are expected to continue fueling growth in the eastern zone, fostering both economic prosperity and a booming tourism sector.
