El Salvador is Safer Than Barcelona, Says European Parliament Member.

At the International Conference on State and Democracy (CIED 2024), European Parliament member Alvise Pérez praised El Salvador’s significant strides in improving security, asserting that the country is now safer than Barcelona, Spain’s second-largest city.

Pérez emphasized that in El Salvador, it is now possible for anyone—whether a woman or a young person—to walk freely through the streets at 7 PM without fear, a level of safety not guaranteed in Barcelona. “Let’s ask ourselves why. What do people prefer, security or insecurity?” Pérez questioned, highlighting the contrast between the two cities.

This statement reflects the international approval surrounding President Nayib Bukele’s security initiatives, such as the Territorial Control Plan, the War on Gangs, and the Exceptional Regime, which have made El Salvador the safest country in the Western Hemisphere. Under Bukele’s leadership, El Salvador has garnered international recognition for its advancements in health, security, education, and development.

Additionally, Pérez criticized the Spanish government for rejecting humanitarian aid offered by President Bukele during the recent emergency caused by heavy rains in Spain’s Valencia region. He expressed regret over Spain’s refusal to accept support, especially during such a critical time. The European lawmaker’s visit to El Salvador is part of his participation in the CIED 2024, an event organized by the Salvadoran government with both national and international leaders in attendance.

Pérez’s remarks underscore the growing influence of El Salvador’s security policies on the global stage and demonstrate his support for the country’s leadership in the region.
