U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz has praised El Salvador’s innovative approach to public security under President Nayib Bukele, highlighting the effectiveness of the Territorial Control Plan and the state of exception in combating gang violence. Since their implementation in June 2019 and March 2022, respectively, these policies have garnered attention across Latin America as countries seek to enhance safety and security for their citizens.
Gaetz, a Republican representative from Florida and president of the US-El Salvador Caucus in Congress, noted that various governments in the region are now looking to El Salvador as a blueprint for tackling crime. He specifically cited the recent announcement by Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino, who aims to emulate Bukele’s strategies in his own fight against criminal organizations.
“We wish President Mulino the best in his war against gangs. The United States is interested in Latin American nations providing security for their own citizens with strong borders and security. This will reduce illegal migration to the United States,” Gaetz stated.
The congressman emphasized that Mulino’s decision to adopt Bukele’s security measures signifies a broader trend he calls the “bukeleization of politics” on an international scale. This trend reflects a growing acknowledgment of the success and popularity of Bukele’s approach to public safety.
“But something bigger is happening here. President Mulino is essentially adopting Nayib Bukele’s ‘state of exception,’ which is very popular and successful. It is the bukeleization of politics and Central American policies. And this is just the beginning… step by step,” Gaetz remarked on social media platform X.
The congressman has previously pointed out the significant reduction in crime rates, particularly homicides, in El Salvador since the implementation of these security policies. “El Salvador has transformed itself from the world capital of murder to an inspiring model for the West!” he declared at a recent Republican Party event.
Despite some opposition in the Salvadoran Assembly from parties like ARENA and VAMOS, Bukele’s security policies continue to receive international attention and support. As more leaders in the region take note, El Salvador’s strategies may pave the way for a new era of public security in Central America.
