El Salvador Hosts National Barista Championship, Showcasing Coffee Talent.

The Salvadoran Coffee Institute (ISC) held the 2024 Salvadoran Barista and Brewing Methods Championship from October 11-13. The event aimed to promote Salvadoran coffee and highlight the talent of young baristas on both national and international stages, turning them into ambassadors for the country’s prized coffee.

Over the three-day event, 31 coffee specialists demonstrated their creativity, professionalism, and innovative techniques, impressing 21 certified judges. The ISC expressed pride on social media, stating, “The participants showcased their skills in every cup, elevating our golden bean. This championship is about more than just coffee—it’s about the technique, creativity, and passion of Salvadoran baristas.”

After an intense competition, Óscar Zuleta took first place in the barista category, while Jonathan Mendoza claimed top honors in the brewing methods category. Byron Meléndez and Marcela Córdova placed second and third in the barista category, while Juan Sánchez and Bryan Coca secured second and third in brewing methods.

The ISC announced that Zuleta will represent El Salvador at the international barista competition in Milan, Italy, in October 2025, while Mendoza will compete in the brewing methods championship in Jakarta, Indonesia, in May 2025.

Samuel Anaya, head of the ISC’s Specialized Coffee School, emphasized that the winners will not only represent the nation’s talent but also showcase Salvadoran coffee culture. “We know there is talent here. We want the world to see the quality of Salvadoran baristas and to experience our coffee, which is among the best in the world,” said Anaya.

ISC President Mauricio Sansivirini highlighted the collaborative effort between the government and Salvadoran coffee leaders to make this championship a success.
