El Salvador’s Tourism Boom: Projected Revenue Soars to $4.07 Billion in 2024.

The Ministry of Tourism has raised its projections for foreign currency earnings from tourism to $4.073 billion by the end of 2024, reflecting a vibrant growth trend in the sector. Minister Morena Valdez confirmed the updated forecast to Diario El Salvador, noting an increase in expected international tourist arrivals from 3.8 million to 4 million.

This upward adjustment is attributed to the country’s enhanced international image, which has made El Salvador an attractive destination for both private travelers and global events. According to MITUR statistics, El Salvador welcomed 2.6 million foreign visitors by August 2023, marking a 25% increase compared to the same period last year. The primary sources of these tourists include the United States, Guatemala, and Honduras, with a growing but lesser contribution from South America and Europe.

The 2024 projections significantly exceed the $3.793 billion generated from 3.4 million foreign visitors in 2023, a 43% increase from the previous year. Minister Valdez emphasized that innovative strategies, such as adopting bitcoin as legal tender, have contributed to the country’s appeal, alongside a series of international events initiated in 2019.

In addition to expected revenue growth, El Salvador will host 20 international surfing tournaments and various sporting events in 2024, reinforcing its position as a premier tourist destination. Looking ahead, Valdez highlighted the importance of strengthening public tourism investments to attract further private sector investment, which will be crucial for sustaining the momentum of tourism growth.
