Historic Sites and Strategic Measures Boost Domestic Tourism in El Salvador.

The administration of President Nayib Bukele continues to deliver impressive outcomes in domestic tourism, thanks to a range of implemented measures. These include enhanced security strategies that have built trust among both local and international visitors, as well as efforts to promote key tourist destinations such as the bustling Historic Center of San Salvador.

Morena Valdez, Minister of Tourism, highlighted the top five most visited public sites during the August vacation period: SívarLand, the Historic Center of San Salvador, the National Library, the Tourist Complex of Puerto de La Libertad, and Balboa Natural Park. The Ministry of Tourism reported 1.1 million visitors to the fairgrounds, over 650,000 to the Historic Center, and more than 340,000 to public tourist sites managed by ISTU. These visits have significantly contributed to the national economy through increased foreign exchange earnings.

Valdez praised the success of the Historic Center and the National Palace, noting that the latter, which opened its doors this August, has already attracted nearly 20,000 visitors and is offering free entry throughout the month.

The Minister also reported a 14% increase in tourist arrivals compared to last year during the August holidays, with monthly tourism growth ranging from 20% to 30%. The sector is projected to contribute over 10% to the Gross Domestic Product. Initially estimated to attract 3.8 million visitors for the year, the actual count reached 2 million by June, suggesting a likely total of 4 million by year-end, according to Valdez.

The Bukele administration remains committed to enhancing El Salvador’s tourism sector by creating more local development opportunities, strengthening infrastructure, and developing human resources.
