The Directorate General of Migration and Foreigners (DGME) reported a significant increase in migratory movements in El Salvador, surpassing 6.9 million entries and exits in the first half of 2024.
By the end of June, the country recorded 6,911,371 movements of nationals and foreigners across various land, air, and sea borders. The most substantial movement occurred at land borders, with 4,617,300 entries and exits, accounting for 67% of the total flow. Air operations followed with 2,258,044 movements, and maritime operations recorded 36,027.
DGME Director Ricardo Cucalón recently commented on the trend, stating, «People from all over the world are saying that the country is the best tourist destination in Central America.»
Regarding arrivals, DGME reported that approximately 3.5 million travelers, both national and foreign, entered the country through various border points from January 1 to June 30 this year. Out of these, 2.3 million arrived by land, 1.1 million by air, and 17,336 by sea.
Additionally, about 3.4 million migratory controls were conducted for traveler exits during the first six months of 2024.
It is noteworthy that Salvadoran land customs operate 24 hours a day, even during emergencies, taking all necessary precautions.
Since 2019, the DGME has processed over 36,675 residency permits, both temporary and permanent, for foreigners who have chosen to live in El Salvador to pursue personal and professional projects.
The institution also highlighted that around 1,870 people have obtained Salvadoran nationality in the past five years after completing the naturalization process and meeting all legal requirements.
Under the current administration, the processing times for these procedures have significantly decreased. The waiting period for obtaining residency, which used to be eight months or more, has been reduced to a maximum of 30 days. Similarly, the time required to grant nationality has been shortened from two to three years to just seven months.
This notable efficiency in handling migration procedures reflects El Salvador’s commitment to welcoming foreign nationals and promoting its status as a prime destination for tourists and new residents alike.
