June closed as the safest month in El Salvador’s history, thanks to the security measures implemented since President Nayib Bukele took office in 2019. These measures have also resulted in more than 650 days without homicides in the country.
On Sunday, June 30, the National Civil Police (PNC) recorded another homicide-free day, according to the institution’s official statistics. These statistics also detail that June 2024 was the safest month in the history of El Salvador.
Last month ended with 24 days free from violence-related deaths, with homicides reported only on June 1, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 29.
President Nayib Bukele, who led the security measures that dismantled gangs in El Salvador, highlighted this historic achievement on his official X account: «June 2024 becomes the safest month in the history of our country.»
The implementation of security measures such as the Territorial Control Plan and the state of exception, approved in March 2022, has led to 134 homicide-free days this year as of July 1. These security measures also resulted in a sustained reduction in crimes for 19 consecutive days in June alone, contributing to the total of 24 days without violent deaths that month.
These days add to the 21 homicide-free days recorded in May, 19 in April, 21 in March, and 24 days each in February and January.
Police statistics indicate that throughout President Nayib Bukele’s administration, there have been a total of 652 days without murders, of which 538 were achieved under the state of exception implemented on March 27, 2022. This measure remains a successful tool in reducing crime rates.
