The guarantee of uninterrupted electrical energy generation in El Salvador has been reaffirmed by the Executive Hydroelectric Commission of the Lempa River (CEL). Despite recent claims of dwindling reservoir levels affecting renewable energy production, CEL President Daniel Álvarez debunked such assertions, labeling them as misinformation.
Addressing concerns raised by a print publication regarding alleged decreases in reservoir levels leading to reduced renewable energy output, Álvarez took to social media to clarify the situation. He emphasized that current reservoir levels are optimal for this time of the year, with measures in place to safeguard resources and prevent critical shortages.
“The misinformation is egregious; cherry-picking March data fails to account for the dynamic changes and proactive measures implemented across the electrical sector,” stated Álvarez.
Assuring Salvadorans of a stable energy supply, Álvarez highlighted the country’s diverse energy matrix, comprising hydroelectric, geothermal, photovoltaic, and wind power sources. With sufficient resources to cater to over 2 million users, El Salvador remains committed to providing affordable energy, with 93% of users unaffected by price increases this quarter due to government subsidies.
Continuing efforts to bolster energy infrastructure, Álvarez underscored ongoing initiatives to expand renewable energy projects and advance universal energy access programs. Additionally, measures have been enacted to mitigate potential crises within the sector.
“In El Salvador, we harness hydroelectric, geothermal, photovoltaic, and wind energy sources to meet demand,” Álvarez affirmed.
Crediting the Bukele administration for its proactive stance, Álvarez emphasized the avoidance of energy crises experienced by neighboring countries. Without such initiatives, El Salvador could have faced scenarios similar to those witnessed in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Ecuador, Honduras, and Colombia.
“We’ve diversified energy sources, including natural gas and bunker fuel, to bolster our national grid resilience,” Álvarez concluded, expressing gratitude for the administration’s foresight and dedication to ensuring energy security.
