El Salvador Advances Educational Infrastructure Renewal Nationwide.

In a concerted effort to enhance the nationwide educational landscape, the National Directorate of Municipal Works (DOM) is set to continue its commitment to revitalize school infrastructure under the «Mi Nueva Escuela» reform, spearheaded by President Nayib Bukele’s administration.

With the aim of providing modern and quality learning environments, the DOM’s initiative seeks to create conducive spaces for children and youth. Previously, parents hesitated to send their children to school due to inadequate facilities, but now, with improved conditions, educational spaces offer optimal settings for learning and wholesome recreation.

«We are dedicated to early childhood education. That’s why our school constructions always include facilities for early childhood education and spaces suitable for the development of younger children,» emphasized Víctor Jiménez, the DOM representative.

This project is part of an overarching strategy to enhance educational coverage and quality, funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The Ministry of Education (Mined) and the office of the First Lady, Gabriela de Bukele, actively support this transformative initiative.

In 2023, the DOM successfully delivered renovated schools such as the Parvularia del Puerto de La Libertad, the Caserío El Ciprés School in San Miguel, and the Sonia Maricela Aguilar Orellana School in the Los Almendros hamlet of Acajutla, among others.

«We face the challenge of transforming over 5,000 schools, and the DOM is collaborating with other institutions working towards the same goal. Currently, we are actively involved in more than 17 ongoing projects, in addition to those already completed,» explained Jiménez.

Parents and educators at the Morelia School in Santiago Nonualco, La Paz, are eagerly anticipating a new state-of-the-art school. Construction commenced on January 7th.

«The Morelia School is one of the 60 schools benefiting from IDB financing, aiming to completely transform the conditions for our children, enabling the full development of their capacities,» reiterated the representative.

Looking ahead to 2024, several other educational institutions are earmarked for intervention, including the Santa Clara Hamlet School in San Luis Talpa, La Paz; Esteban Castro School in Santo Domingo, San Vicente; Santo Tomás School, and Juayúa School in Sonsonate. The ongoing efforts underscore a commitment to providing quality education and fostering a conducive learning environment for the youth of El Salvador.
