In an ongoing effort to maintain a secure prison system, authorities in the country are conducting routine inspections in correctional facilities, ensuring that a climate of order prevails. The joint operation, led by the National Civil Police (PNC) in collaboration with the General Directorate of Prisons, aims to enhance security measures within the country’s prison system.
According to the PNC, surprise inspections are being carried out in 100% of the country’s penitentiaries. These impromptu searches are an integral part of the overall security strategy to prevent prisons from becoming breeding grounds for criminal activities. The Maintenance of Order Unit (UMO) of the Police has been deployed to oversee and guarantee that these inspections transpire in an atmosphere of complete tranquility.
In a statement released via social media on Wednesday, the PNC emphasized, «The Maintenance of Order Unit, in coordination with Prisons, is conducting surprise inspections in 100% of the country’s prisons. These surprise inspections are necessary to ensure that prisons never again become hotbeds of criminal activity.»
The institution issued a stern warning, stating, «We will not allow a single order to leave the prisons to harm Salvadorans. We work in conjunction with the prison authorities to thoroughly inspect every cell in all prisons across the country.»
Meanwhile, the General Directorate of Prisons addressed misinformation circulating on social media, specifically dispelling false claims that the increased presence of law enforcement was due to violent incidents at the La Esperanza Penitentiary, also known as Mariona.
«FALSE. There is no record of any violent incidents in the country’s prison system. We urge the public to obtain information through our official channels,» clarified the prison authority in a tweet.
Since the initiation of the Territorial Control Plan, authorities have prioritized regaining control of prisons that, during previous administrations, were entirely under the influence of criminal gangs. The ongoing efforts underscore the commitment to maintaining a secure and orderly environment within the country’s correctional facilities.
