Europe Interested in New Salvadoran Products.

As the 10th anniversary of the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union is being celebrated, both blocs reaffirm their interest in expanding trade.

In a significant development, the Ministry of Economy (Minec) reports that over 250 Salvadoran companies are currently exporting their products to the European Union under the existing partnership arrangement between this bloc and Central American countries.

Silvia Cuéllar, President of the Corporation of Exporters of El Salvador (Coexport), emphasized the importance of the European market for national businesses due to promising prospects and substantial demand. She highlighted that Salvadoran products such as coffee, sugar, tuna, and other foods have successfully entered the European market.

However, Cuéllar noted a recent shift in demand. “Buyers have emerged who are directly taking Salvadoran products to Europe, a trend that did not previously exist. Instead, intermediaries from countries like Honduras used to consolidate business, but now we are sending products directly,” she pointed out.

Cuéllar expanded on the exportable product range, mentioning a growing demand for items like chocolates, various types of crafts, and snacks. Particularly noteworthy is the interest in traditional Salvadoran hammocks. “We are also exporting crafts, such as our renowned canvas and woven hammocks, which have a longstanding reputation in Europe. We are actively showcasing them at fairs,” she affirmed.

Addressing efforts to diversify markets, the Coexport president disclosed, “80% of our exports go to Central America and the United States combined. What we are witnessing now is a broader diversification, not only towards Europe but also other markets. We could be looking at a 75% distribution between these two regions, redirecting exports to other markets.”

Cuéllar expressed confidence in further growth with Europe, stating, “With Europe, there is an opportunity to explore new alternatives. I firmly believe that our growth with Europe will continue. National companies are also gearing up to meet the sustainability and environmental requirements of this market.”
