To bridge the digital divide and enhance educational opportunities, the Salvadoran government, led by President Nayib Bukele, is set to provide high-speed internet access to 1,500 schools across the country using a satellite-based system, known as Starlink.
The initiative, which received a favorable ruling from the Assembly’s Finance Committee last Monday, demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving access to technology and connectivity for students and educators in public schools. In an effort to achieve this, the Legislative Assembly has approved a $6 million allocation to the budget of the Superintendence of Electricity and Telecommunications (Siget), aimed at further advancing connectivity in public educational institutions through the adoption of satellite-based internet services.

Each of the 1,500 educational centers scattered across El Salvador is set to receive a substantial investment of $4,000, which will empower them with the necessary technological tools to benefit both students and teachers alike. This initiative not only expands educational opportunities but also fosters digital literacy and inclusion.
The importance of this project cannot be understated. Access to high-speed internet has become a fundamental requirement for modern education, enabling students to access a wealth of online resources and engage in distance learning. By providing this infrastructure to 1,500 schools, the government is making a significant stride towards ensuring that no student is left behind due to a lack of access to digital resources.
The satellite-based internet system, Starlink, has proven to be effective in providing high-speed internet to remote and underserved areas, making it an ideal choice for reaching schools in various parts of the country. This innovative approach will not only enhance the learning experience but also open doors to new opportunities for both students and teachers, enabling them to stay connected to the world and participate fully in the digital age.
The government’s commitment to improving education through enhanced connectivity is commendable, and it is expected that this project will have a positive and lasting impact on the educational landscape in El Salvador. As the country invests in its future by providing high-speed internet access to schools, it is taking a significant step toward creating a more inclusive and technologically advanced society.
