Underground Cabling Elevates the Image of the Historic Center.

Salvadorans are now given the opportunity to marvel at the architectural beauty of numerous historical buildings that have slowly resurfaced in the Historic Center of San Salvador. This renaissance is a consequence of the various stages of a mega-revitalization project undertaken by both the Central Government and the municipality.

One significant phase of this project involves the transition from overhead cabling to underground cabling, a change that, according to architect Jacquelinne Rodríguez, holds numerous advantages for the city of San Salvador.

Rodríguez emphasizes that the most significant benefit lies in “urban image improvement, as beneath the current overhead cabling, there are countless stunning historical facades that, thanks to this project, will be enhanced and showcased in all their glory.”

According to the architect, overhead cabling “visually appears disorderly, discordant, and dirty, and the simple removal of this visual element will open up the vista for all, accentuate architectural beauty, and boost tourism in the area. While the cabling has improved, this change will further enhance it.”

However, underground cabling not only contributes to aesthetics but, in Rodríguez’s opinion, it also simplifies maintenance and enhances safety for the personnel of electric companies and the general population navigating the affected streets.

“It’s easier to prevent damage because during the rainy season, reports of fallen trees, branches that break loose and damage cabling or poles, as well as power outages affecting electronic devices, are common,” explained the architecture professional.

Another benefit highlighted by Rodríguez is that this transition signifies a step towards modernization for the capital city.

“This is not a new concept in other countries; it’s been implemented for a while as an urban image and reorganization initiative. I believe this is something that should be required for new projects in peri-urban and residential areas because it brings forth more benefits,” Rodríguez suggested.

She added that every improvement made to the Historic Center adds more value to the area and increases its profitability. The shift to underground cabling not only improves the city’s appearance but also simplifies maintenance and enhances safety, ultimately propelling San Salvador into the modern era.
