El Salvador Ensures Stability in Electricity Generation as Other Central American Countries Struggle.

The small Central American nation of El Salvador stands out as a beacon of stability in electricity generation amidst a regional energy crisis. As neighboring countries grapple with power shortages and soaring prices, El Salvador remains committed to maintaining a steady supply of electricity for its population while even exporting to other Central American nations.

According to the General Directorate of Energy, Hydrocarbons, and Mines (DGEHM), El Salvador has successfully secured its energy supply despite the challenges posed by the El Niño phenomenon, which has plunged other countries in the region into crisis.

The DGEHM reports that several countries in the region are currently seeking surplus energy from the Regional Electricity Market (MER) to meet their demands. Some nations have been forced to implement power cuts, directly affecting their citizens due to the scarcity of electricity generation in the region.

Daniel Álvarez, the Director General of Energy, Hydrocarbons, and Mines, emphasized the government’s proactive measures to shield the population from energy shortages. «Under President Nayib Bukele’s leadership, the Salvadoran government will not allow its citizens to experience power outages or rationing, as is occurring in other countries in the region. The institutions responsible for this vital sector are working tirelessly to ensure uninterrupted economic activity and to safeguard households’ access to this essential resource,» stated Álvarez.

Furthermore, the DGEHM assures that El Salvador is the only country in the region that has managed to maintain stable electricity prices while also exporting energy to other Central American nations. In contrast, the rest of the countries in the region continue to rely on expensive energy imports.

The government has implemented a series of measures through the DGEHM to guarantee the availability and price stabilization of electricity nationwide. These measures include activating Public Nature Contracts (CNP) and issuing temporary decrees to prudently adjust the export of this resource to the region, thus preventing negative impacts on the population.

While El Salvador navigates the energy crisis with resilience, it stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to prioritize its citizens’ welfare. By ensuring a steady supply of electricity at affordable prices and even exporting to neighboring countries, El Salvador remains an exemplary model in the region.

As the energy landscape continues to fluctuate, El Salvador’s proactive approach serves as an inspiration to other nations, demonstrating the importance of robust infrastructure, strategic planning, and a steadfast commitment to securing essential resources for the well-being and progress of its people.
