Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam Docks in Acajutla, Opening El Salvador’s New Cruise Season.

El Salvador has officially inaugurated its 2026–2027 cruise season with the arrival of the Dutch-flagged Nieuw Amsterdam at the strategic Port of Acajutla. Carrying 1,921 international passengers, the Holland America Line vessel arrived as part of its regional itinerary, marking a major milestone in the country’s push to position itself as a top-tier destination in Central America.

The inaugural visit offers travelers direct access to the nation’s rich heritage through curated excursions in western El Salvador. Among the primary destinations are the Joya de Cerén Archaeological Park—a UNESCO World Heritage site—alongside the ancient ruins of Tazumal and the vibrant cultural district of Nahuizalco, famous for its traditional indigenous crafts and local gastronomy.

This arrival marks the start of an ambitious maritime calendar running through June, strategically aligned with the North American and European winter months when warm-weather destinations see peak demand. Tourism officials previously anticipated a strong lineup for the cycle, pointing to growing international interest following a successful 2025 season that brought seven cruise ships and over 8,500 visitors to Salvadoran shores.

According to local tourism authorities, the influx of cruise visitors highlights the country’s ongoing transformation into a global travel hub. “El Salvador continues to demonstrate its readiness to welcome world-class tourism,” stated tourism officials during recent industry updates, emphasizing that expanding port arrivals remains a cornerstone of the nation’s economic and cultural strategy.
