UN Tourism Ranks El Salvador Among World’s Top-Performing Destinations in 2026.

El Salvador has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing travel destinations in 2026, driven by a remarkable 37% increase in international arrivals during the first half of the year. According to the latest World Tourism Barometer from UN Tourism, the country’s performance drastically outpaced global travel trends, securing its position alongside top international performers like Paraguay, Bhutan, and South Korea.

While overall tourism in the Americas grew by a modest 2%, Central America stood out as a key growth driver for the region with a 15% expansion. El Salvador spearheaded this regional momentum, welcoming 2.49 million international visitors between January and June. Official data from the Salvadoran Tourism Corporation (Corsatur) highlights that 2.18 million of these visitors were stayover tourists—a segment that experienced robust double-digit expansion.

This strong performance comes at a time when global travel demand faces heightened uncertainty. Worldwide international tourist arrivals reached 690 million in the first six months of 2026, but momentum slowed in the second quarter due to shifting holiday calendars and regional instability. “Tourism has continued to grow, but that growth is fragile. The situation in the Middle East has touched destinations far beyond the region itself,” noted Shaikha Al Nuwais, Secretary-General of UN Tourism, emphasizing the need for resilience across global markets.

Despite these geopolitical headwinds and a 22% decline in Middle Eastern travel, El Salvador’s sustained popularity among international travelers—particularly from the United States—underscores its growing appeal and resilience on the global stage.
