The rise of Guatemalan visitors to El Salvador is driving significant investment in the country’s aviation sector, leading to the restoration of key regional flight frequencies. Minister of Tourism Morena Valdez confirmed that Guatemala-based TAG Airlines will soon begin operations connecting La Aurora International Airport directly with El Salvador International Airport. Beyond the main terminal in Comalapa, officials are exploring the future use of the Jagüey and Zapote airfields to further decentralize and enhance travel options.
This expansion is the result of strategic coordination between the Ministry of Tourism and the Civil Aviation Authority (AAC). Valdez emphasized the government’s commitment to regional integration, stating that the important thing is that we promote intra-regional connectivity. By streamlining these routes, the government aims to capitalize on the growing interest from neighboring markets while facilitating smoother transit for international travelers moving through the Central American corridor.
Carlos Umaña, president of the Salvadoran Chamber of Tourism (Casatur), announced that the new service will debut on May 4 with two daily frequencies. He noted that the goal is to double this capacity in the short term to meet the high demand observed during recent holiday seasons. According to Umaña, if we improve connectivity, we improve the flow not only of Guatemalans, but of all foreigners who visit the region.
The influx of tourists has proven the necessity of more robust air links, as the Guatemalan market remains a primary pillar for El Salvador’s tourism economy. Industry leaders believe that increasing the ease of travel between these two nations will create a “spillover effect,” attracting more North American and European tourists who wish to visit multiple destinations in a single trip.
With these new flights, El Salvador continues to position itself as a modern hub for tourism and business in Central America. The collaboration between the private sector and government entities reflects a shared vision of a highly connected region.
