President Bukele Proposes Transferring El Salvador’s Entire Prison Population in Response to Petro

El Salvador reaffirmed its firm position on justice and national sovereignty after President Nayib Bukele publicly responded to statements made by Colombian President Gustavo Petro regarding the country’s prison system.

In his message, President Bukele proposed the transfer of the entirety of El Salvador’s prison population, including all categories of detainees, as a direct and comprehensive response to the claims raised. The proposal was presented as a consistent solution to address concerns without partial measures.

The response follows remarks by President Petro, who suggested that individuals held in El Salvador are “innocent people” and described detention facilities using controversial terminology. In contrast, President Bukele emphasized that such assertions, if true, would require decisive and universal action in defense of human dignity.

Framing his proposal with respect and openness, Bukele underscored that any evaluation of the prison system should apply equally to all cases, reinforcing a principle of consistency and accountability. He also reiterated El Salvador’s willingness to engage in dialogue while firmly defending the country’s security policies.

Officials maintain that these policies have been central to restoring public safety and stability, contributing to a broader transformation in national conditions.

Through this response, El Salvador projects a position of strength, transparency, and institutional clarity, while continuing to prioritize the protection and well-being of its citizens.
