El Salvador Leads Tourism Growth in the Americas with Record 4.1 Million Visitors

El Salvador has emerged as the fastest-growing tourism destination in the Americas, recording 4.1 million international visitors in 2025, a 92% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels, according to figures highlighted by UN Tourism and reported by Forbes.

The surge in visitors reflects a broader transformation taking place in El Salvador, where tourism revenues reached $3.6 billion in 2025, representing a 215.3% increase since 2019. International tourism has been driven by improved security, major international events, and promotion strategies led by the administration of President Nayib Bukele.

Data from UN Tourism indicates that the Central American nation—often referred to as the “Little Thumb of America”—is not only leading tourism growth in Latin America but also ranks among the top three countries worldwide with the largest tourism increase during this period.

With a population of fewer than seven million people, El Salvador has become an increasingly popular destination for travelers seeking nature, adventure, and cultural experiences. Visitors are drawn to iconic locations such as Surf City, the scenic Santa Ana Volcano, and the revitalized Historic Center of San Salvador.

Officials attribute much of the tourism boom to the country’s improved security conditions. Since 2019, homicide rates have fallen to historic lows, helping reshape international perceptions of the country and strengthening its reputation as a safe destination for travelers.

The improved security environment has also influenced international travel guidance. The U.S. Department of State recently updated its travel advisory for El Salvador to Level 1, the safest category, reflecting growing confidence among international visitors.

Tourism entrepreneurs have also observed the impact of the country’s transformation. Enzo Rubio, owner of cafés in popular beach destinations including El Tunco and El Zonte, noted that improved security and strong international promotion have played a key role in the sector’s growth.

As El Salvador continues expanding its tourism infrastructure and global promotion efforts, the country is increasingly positioning itself as one of the most dynamic travel destinations in the Americas.
