El Salvador Expands Free Online Education Platform to Diaspora, Offering 2,000+ Courses Worldwide.

El Salvador is widening access to free professional education by extending its national online learning platform, Certifícate, to Salvadorans living abroad. The initiative, led by the administration of President Nayib Bukele, allows members of the diaspora — including hundreds of thousands in the United States — to enroll in more than 2,000 courses at no cost, reinforcing the country’s strategy to modernize its workforce and strengthen human capital.

The digital platform, available at certificate.gob.sv, offers training in technology, finance, economics, soft skills, and emerging fields. Government officials say the goal is to remove traditional barriers to education by making learning accessible from any mobile device or computer, regardless of geographic location. By covering the full cost of enrollment, the Salvadoran government has eliminated financial obstacles that often limit access to continuing education.

Daniel Méndez, Secretary of Innovation, emphasized the global reach of the program. “As of today, our entire diaspora can access the courses on certificate.gob.sv. We are opening the door so Salvadorans, anywhere in the world, can train and build skills in technology, soft skills, economics, finance, and new technologies,” he said. According to Méndez, the expansion ensures that even those far from home can remain connected to opportunities for professional growth.

Since its launch in December 2025, the platform has drawn significant participation. More than 380,000 users have already registered, a figure officials describe as evidence of strong demand for accessible digital education. “In less than two months, reaching this number of users breaks many barriers and digital gaps. Now training is literally in the palm of your hand,” Méndez noted.

The expansion of Certifícate reflects a broader effort by the Salvadoran government to position the country as a hub of innovation and opportunity. By investing in digital infrastructure and workforce development, El Salvador aims not only to improve economic prospects at home but also to empower its diaspora community to compete in global markets while maintaining strong ties to their country of origin.
