El Salvador will invest over $245 million to modernize its international airport, aiming to improve infrastructure and services for the growing number of passengers, announced Federico Anliker, president of the Autonomous Executive Port Commission (CEPA). The multi-year plan is part of President Nayib Bukele’s strategy to position the airport as the most modern, efficient, and expansive in the region.
The investment includes a $47 million baggage claim terminal with up to eight new areas, customs facilities, immigration offices, and advanced X-ray systems. The project begins in August and is expected to be completed within eight months, funded directly by CEPA.
Other key projects include a multi-level parking facility, six new boarding gates, and $2.5 million for upgrades to Immigration Point 1, such as new floors, roofing, and security systems.
These efforts are part of the national modernization plan led by the current administration to enhance travel experiences and maintain El Salvador’s airport as a regional benchmark.
During the August holiday season, from July 28 to August 8, the airport expects to serve around 170,000 passengers—a 2.5% increase from the previous year. Additionally, 1,400 commercial flight operations are projected, marking a 5% growth compared to 2024.
Currently, 13 passenger airlines and six cargo airlines operate in El Salvador, with up to 160 daily flight operations and approximately 17,000 travelers passing through the airport each day. CEPA has deployed 1,800 employees to ensure quality service throughout the holiday period. Of the 90,000 foreign visitors expected, 44% will arrive by air.
«We’ve never seen this level of airport activity before,» said Anliker. «That’s why we’re investing heavily—to deliver top-tier service for every passenger.»
