El Salvador Ranks Among Top Global Travel Performers in 2024.

El Salvador continues to solidify its status as a rising star in global tourism, earning recognition as the second-best performing travel destination worldwide and the top in the Western Hemisphere, according to the latest UN Tourism Barometer released in January 2025.

The ranking, which considers factors such as safety, budget accessibility, affluence, popularity and sentiment, and climate, highlighted El Salvador’s dynamic growth in tourism appeal. With an 81% increase in international tourist arrivals compared to 2019, the country was only outpaced by Qatar (+137%). Other high performers included Albania (+80%), Saudi Arabia (+69%), and Curaçao (+51%).

Much of this success is attributed to El Salvador’s expanding reputation among global travelers, particularly surfers seeking authentic experiences on its Pacific coast. Towns like El Tunco have become emblematic for their consistent waves and laid-back, bohemian atmosphere.

The country’s allure is further strengthened by a combination of modern cities like San Salvador, Surf City, and Santa Ana, as well as archaeological sites, volcanic landscapes, rich gastronomy, and lush forests—making it a well-rounded destination for all types of travelers.

“This new milestone adds to a series of achievements in tourism that reflect President Bukele’s commitment to making tourism a key pillar of the national economy,” said a government spokesperson.

With this momentum, El Salvador positions itself not just as a trending spot, but as a sustainable destination with lasting appeal.
